Nutanix AHV para quien viene de vSphere: Prism, protección, LCM y un disco caídoNutanix AHV for vSphere people: Prism, protection, LCM and a failed disk

Prism Element frente a Prism Central, qué hacen la CVM, los contenedores de almacenamiento y el factor de replicación, crear una VM en AHV, snapshots y políticas de protección con réplica a una segunda sede, actualizar con LCM, poner un host en mantenimiento y leer una alerta de disco o una VM lenta con ncli, acli y NCC.Prism Element versus Prism Central, what the CVM, storage containers and replication factor do, creating a VM in AHV, snapshots and protection policies replicating to a second site, upgrading with LCM, putting a host into maintenance, and reading a disk alert or a slow VM with ncli, acli and NCC.

Qué vas a conseguir

cluster status | grep -E "CVM:|state"2026-10-28 09:12:41 INFO cluster:3195 The state of the cluster: start CVM: 10.20.0.31 Up CVM: 10.20.0.32 Up CVM: 10.20.0.33 Up, ZeusLeader CVM: 10.20.0.34 Upncli container ls | grep -E "Name |Replication Factor" Name : ctr-servidores Replication Factor : 2 Name : ctr-vdi Replication Factor : 2ncli cluster get-domain-fault-tolerance-status type=node Domain Type : NODE Component Type : EXTENT_GROUPS Current Fault Tolerance : 1

CVM · acli
acli vm.create srv-app01 num_vcpus=2 num_cores_per_vcpu=1 memory=8Gacli vm.disk_create srv-app01 clone_from_image=win2022-plantillaacli vm.disk_create srv-app01 create_size=100G container=ctr-servidoresacli vm.nic_create srv-app01 network=vlan20-servidoresacli vm.on srv-app01acli vm.snapshot_create srv-app01 snapshot_name_list=antes-parche-oct

Life Cycle Manager (en Prism: LCM) actualiza AOS, AHV, NCC, firmware y BIOS.

acli host.enter_maintenance_mode 10.20.0.22 wait=true

  1. No reiniciar nada.
  2. Ver el estado general con NCC:
CVM · NCC y discos
ncc health_checks run_all+-----------------------+| State         | Count |+-----------------------+| Pass          | 228   || Warning       | 3     || Fail          | 1     || Total Plugins | 232   |+-----------------------+Detailed information can be found in /home/nutanix/data/logs/ncc-output-latest.loggrep -A6 "FAIL:" /home/nutanix/data/logs/ncc-output-latest.logFAIL: Disk 0000003 (serial S6Z4NX0T812345) on host 10.20.0.23 is offline.ncli disk get-remove-status    Disk Id                   : 0005f1a2-...::42    Remove Status             : DATA_MIGRATION_INITIATED
  1. Esperar a que la tolerancia vuelva a 1 (ncli cluster get-domain-fault-tolerance-status type=node). Mientras sea 0, nada de mantenimientos ni actualizaciones.

What you'll get

Translating what you already know from vSphere to Nutanix with AHV: where each thing is managed, how the cluster stores data and how much it can survive, creating and protecting a VM with replication to another site, upgrading without a downtime window, and answering a disk alert or a slow VM with the cluster's own tools.

Before you start

  • A Nutanix cluster running AOS and AHV (three nodes or more), administrator access to Prism Element and, if there is one, Prism Central.
  • SSH access to the CVMs as the nutanix user: that is where ncli, acli and ncc live.
  • The VMware vSphere and vCenter guide as a starting point: this table sums up the equivalents.

1. Inside the cluster: CVMs, containers and replication factor

Each node runs a Controller VM (CVM) that owns the local disks in passthrough and serves storage to the whole cluster. VMs write to their local CVM, and the CVM copies each piece of data to another node (RF2) or to two others (RF3) before acknowledging the write.

  • RF2 survives losing one node or one disk; RF3 survives two, but needs five nodes or more and uses more space.
  • Storage containers are the "datastores": each with its own compression, deduplication or erasure coding. One container per kind of workload (servers, VDI, backups) is enough.
  • Keep at least one node's worth of capacity free: if one fails, its data is rebuilt on the others and needs room.
CVM · cluster status
cluster status | grep -E "CVM:|state"2026-10-28 09:12:41 INFO cluster:3195 The state of the cluster: start CVM: 10.20.0.31 Up CVM: 10.20.0.32 Up CVM: 10.20.0.33 Up, ZeusLeader CVM: 10.20.0.34 Upncli container ls | grep -E "Name |Replication Factor" Name : ctr-servers Replication Factor : 2 Name : ctr-vdi Replication Factor : 2ncli cluster get-domain-fault-tolerance-status type=node Domain Type : NODE Component Type : EXTENT_GROUPS Current Fault Tolerance : 1

Current Fault Tolerance: 1 means the cluster can lose a node right now without losing data. If it is 0, nothing gets touched until it is back to 1.

2. Create a VM in AHV

In Prism (Element or Central): VMs › Create VM, with a disk from an image or an ISO and the NIC on its subnet. The same with acli, handy for repeating it:

CVM · acli
acli vm.create srv-app01 num_vcpus=2 num_cores_per_vcpu=1 memory=8Gacli vm.disk_create srv-app01 clone_from_image=win2022-templateacli vm.disk_create srv-app01 create_size=100G container=ctr-serversacli vm.nic_create srv-app01 network=vlan20-serversacli vm.on srv-app01acli vm.snapshot_create srv-app01 snapshot_name_list=before-patch-oct
  • Install Nutanix Guest Tools (NGT) and the VirtIO drivers: without them disk and network are slower and snapshots aren't application-consistent.
  • To bring VMs over from vSphere, Nutanix Move migrates with incremental sync and a short cutover at the end.
  • A snapshot is not a backup: it lives on the same cluster. Delete it once the change is validated.

3. Protection and replication to a second site

Prism Element has Protection Domains (a group of VMs, a schedule and a remote site). New deployments use Prism Central protection policies, applied by category: a VM that gets the category is protected without touching the policy.

Prism Central · Protection policy

  • Complete it with a Recovery Plan: boot order, delay between groups and the target network, with an isolated test network for rehearsals.
  • Run a test failover every quarter: it is the only way to know the promised RPO is met and that the VMs boot at the other site.
  • Replication doesn't replace backup: if the VMs get encrypted, the encryption is replicated.

4. Upgrade with LCM and put a host into maintenance

Life Cycle Manager (in Prism: LCM) upgrades AOS, AHV, NCC, firmware and BIOS. First Perform Inventory, then pick versions and let it run the pre-checks. It goes node by node: migrates the VMs, reboots, waits for the cluster to regain resiliency and moves to the next.

  • Usual order: NCC, then AOS, then AHV, and firmware last. Check the compatibility matrix first.
  • Run ncc health_checks run_all before starting and don't launch LCM with open failures.

For hardware work on a node, maintenance is done in Prism (Hardware › Host › Enter Maintenance Mode) or from a CVM:

acli host.enter_maintenance_mode 10.20.0.22 wait=true

That empties the AHV host of its VMs by live migration. If the node has to be powered off, its CVM goes into maintenance too (ncli host edit id=<id> enable-maintenance-mode=true). When done, in reverse order: ncli host edit id=<id> enable-maintenance-mode=false and acli host.exit_maintenance_mode 10.20.0.22.

VMs pinned to a host or with strict affinity are not migrated: they are powered off. Check them first, and confirm Data Resiliency is OK before moving on to the next node.

5. The ticket: "the cluster shows a storage alert / a disk failed"

Tuesday, 08:40. Prism shows Disk ... marked offline and the Data Resiliency widget in amber.

  1. Don't reboot anything. The cluster is already rebuilding the copies that disk held onto the remaining disks.
  2. See the overall state with NCC:
CVM · NCC and disks
ncc health_checks run_all+-----------------------+| State         | Count |+-----------------------+| Pass          | 228   || Warning       | 3     || Fail          | 1     || Total Plugins | 232   |+-----------------------+Detailed information can be found in /home/nutanix/data/logs/ncc-output-latest.loggrep -A6 "FAIL:" /home/nutanix/data/logs/ncc-output-latest.logFAIL: Disk 0000003 (serial S6Z4NX0T812345) on host 10.20.0.23 is offline.ncli disk get-remove-status    Disk Id                   : 0005f1a2-...::42    Remove Status             : DATA_MIGRATION_INITIATED
  1. Wait for fault tolerance to return to 1 (ncli cluster get-domain-fault-tolerance-status type=node). While it is 0, no maintenance and no upgrades.
  2. Open the case with the vendor with the serial number, the NCC summary and a log bundle (logbay collect), and hot-swap the disk. Prism detects it and adds it to the pool (Hardware › Diagram; if it doesn't do it on its own: Repartition and Add).

The variant: "a VM is slow". In Prism, on the VM: controller latency (read and write), IOPS and CPU and memory usage. High latency across the whole cluster points at storage (SSD tier full, a degraded disk or node: NCC will say). High latency only on that VM points at the VM itself: no VirtIO, a single disk with a deep queue, or an old snapshot nobody deleted. High CPU wait (CPU Ready) means an overloaded host: let ADS rebalance or review the affinity rules. acli vm.get srv-app01 shows the real configuration (vCPUs, memory, disks and which container each one sits on).

6. What you review each month

  • The result of ncc health_checks run_all and unresolved alerts in Prism Central.
  • Capacity: pool usage against the one-node reserve, and the Planning forecast in Prism Central.
  • Snapshots older than a week and replications that miss their RPO.
  • Pending versions in LCM and the end of support of the AOS branch in use.

Next steps

  • The Backup and DR/BCP guide to fit protection policies into the continuity plan and its tests.
  • Veeam Backup integrates with AHV for copies outside the cluster.
  • Red Hat OpenShift and Kubernetes can run on the cluster with the Nutanix CSI driver.
  • Terraform with the Nutanix provider to create VMs and categories as code.
