VMware ESXi 8 desde cero: instalación, red de gestión en la DCUI, NTP, alta en vCenter, vSwitch, datastore y un host en Not RespondingVMware ESXi 8 from scratch: installation, management network in the DCUI, NTP, adding it to vCenter, vSwitch, datastore and a host showing Not Responding

Installing ESXi 8 on a new server, setting up the management network in the DCUI (VLAN, static IP and DNS), first checks in the Host Client, NTP, adding it to vCenter, the standard vSwitch and its port groups, the datastore, and the host that shows Not Responding.

Qué vas a conseguir

DCUI · System Customization › Configure Management Network
Configure Management NetworkNetwork Adapters

vmnic1 (Connected)
Configure Management NetworkVLAN (optional)

Suffixescontoso.local

SSH · esx03.contoso.local
esxcli system version get Product: VMware ESXi Version: 8.0.3 Build: Releasebuild-24022510 Update: 3esxcli hardware platform get | grep -E "Vendor Name|Product Name|Serial Number" Vendor Name: Dell Inc. Product Name: PowerEdge R760 Serial Number: 7XKQ2W3esxcli network ip interface ipv4 getName IPv4 Address IPv4 Netmask IPv4 Broadcast Address Type Gateway DHCP DNS---- ------------ ------------- -------------- ------------ ---------- --------vmk0 10.10.10.23 255.255.255.0 10.10.10.255 STATIC 10.10.10.1 falseesxcli network ip dns server list DNSServers: 10.10.0.10, 10.10.0.11

SSH · esx03.contoso.local
esxcli system ntp set --server=10.10.0.10 --server=10.10.0.11 --enabled=trueesxcli system ntp get Enabled: true Loglevel: warning Servers: 10.10.0.10, 10.10.0.11esxcli system time get2026-11-03T08:42:17Z

vSphere Client · CL-PROD › Add Host
Host name or IP addressesx03.contoso.local
User nameroot
Password••••••••••••
Next
Security Alertcertificate SHA1 thumbprint 4E:A1:...:9C
Yes
Assign licensevSphere 8 Enterprise Plus (CL-PROD)
Lockdown modeDisabled
VM locationDatacenter-Madrid
Finish

SSH · esx03.contoso.local
esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup add --portgroup-name=VLAN20-Servers --vswitch-name=vSwitch0esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup set --portgroup-name=VLAN20-Servers --vlan-id=20esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup add --portgroup-name=vMotion --vswitch-name=vSwitch0esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup set --portgroup-name=vMotion --vlan-id=40esxcli network ip interface add --interface-name=vmk1 --portgroup-name=vMotionesxcli network ip interface ipv4 set --interface-name=vmk1 --ipv4=10.10.40.23 --netmask=255.255.255.0 --type=staticesxcli network ip interface tag add --interface-name=vmk1 --tagname=VMotionesxcli network vswitch standard portgroup listName Virtual Switch Active Clients VLAN ID---------------- -------------- -------------- -------Management Network vSwitch0 1 10VLAN20-Servers vSwitch0 0 20VM Network vSwitch0 0 0vMotion vSwitch0 1 40

SSH · esx03.contoso.local
esxcli storage core adapter rescan --allesxcli storage filesystem listMount Point Volume Name UUID Mounted Type Size Free------------------------------------------------- ------------ ----------------------------------- ------- ------ ------------- -------------/vmfs/volumes/6718a2c4-1b2e30f8-77d1-b8cef6a1c210 DS-SAN-01 6718a2c4-1b2e30f8-77d1-b8cef6a1c210 true VMFS-6 4397778075648 1975684857856/vmfs/volumes/6718a2d9-0f43aa10-4c2e-b8cef6a1c210 DS-SAN-02 6718a2d9-0f43aa10-4c2e-b8cef6a1c210 true VMFS-6 4397778075648 227633266688/vmfs/volumes/672f19b0-3a5c1e66-90ab-b8cef6a1c312 esx03-local 672f19b0-3a5c1e66-90ab-b8cef6a1c312 true VMFS-6 106837311488 105264447488

New Datastore formatea el dispositivo.

  5. Reiniciar los agentes, de uno en uno. Por SSH o desde Host Client › Manage › Services:
SSH · esx03.contoso.local
/etc/init.d/vpxa restart/etc/init.d/hostd restartesxcli vsan cluster getvSAN Clustering is not enabled on this host

What you'll get

A freshly delivered server turned into one more host in the cluster: ESXi 8 installed, the management network with its VLAN, static IP and DNS, time synchronised, the host added to vCenter with the same port groups as its peers and seeing the shared storage. And the routine for the ticket that arrives sooner or later: the host shows Not Responding in vCenter.

Before you start

  • The server listed in the Broadcom Compatibility Guide for ESXi 8, and the vendor's custom ISO (Dell, HPE, Lenovo), which carries the drivers for its cards.
  • A boot disk of at least 32 GB (128 GB recommended), ideally a mirrored M.2 or a BOSS card. SD cards and USB sticks as the only boot device are no longer supported in ESXi 8.
  • The server's remote console via iDRAC or iLO, with the ISO mounted as virtual media (see the iDRAC and iLO guide).
  • The network details requested beforehand: name esx03.contoso.local, IP 10.10.10.23/24, gateway 10.10.10.1, management VLAN 10, DNS 10.10.0.10 and 10.10.0.11. The A and PTR records created in DNS before you start.
  • The switch ports for the server's NICs configured as trunks with the management, server and vMotion VLANs.

1. Installing ESXi 8

Boot the server from the ISO in the remote console:

  1. Enter on the welcome screen and F11 to accept the licence.
  2. Choose the boot disk. Check the model and size: if the server already sees LUNs from the array, do not pick one by mistake. The installer wipes the disk you select.
  3. Keyboard layout: whatever your team uses.
  4. root password: long, and stored in the team's password manager from this moment.
  5. F11 to install. When it finishes, unmount the ISO and press Enter to reboot.

If the boot disk has plenty of room, the installer creates a local datastore called datastore1. Later you rename it after the host so it is not confused with another one.

2. The management network in the DCUI

The yellow and grey screen is the DCUI (Direct Console User Interface). F2 and the root user:

DCUI · System Customization › Configure Management Network
Configure Management NetworkNetwork Adapters
vmnic0 (Connected)
vmnic1 (Connected)
Configure Management NetworkVLAN (optional)
VLAN ID10
Configure Management NetworkIPv4 Configuration
Set static IPv4 address and network configuration

Primary DNS Server10.10.0.10
Alternate DNS Server10.10.0.11
Hostnameesx03
Configure Management NetworkCustom DNS Suffixes
Suffixescontoso.local
  • Network Adapters: two NICs for management, connected to different switches. If one fails, the host stays reachable.
  • VLAN: only if the switch port is a trunk and management traffic is tagged. If the port is an access port in VLAN 10, leave it empty. Setting the VLAN on one side and not the other is the most common mistake on this screen: the IP is right and nothing answers.
  • On Esc the DCUI asks Apply changes and restart management network?: Y.
  • Test Management Network pings the gateway and the DNS servers and resolves the host's own name. All four lines OK before moving on.

Troubleshooting Options is where the ESXi Shell and SSH are enabled. Turn them on for the setup and off when you finish: SSH left permanently open is a finding in any audit.

3. First checks in the Host Client

The Host Client is the host's own web console: https://esx03.contoso.local/ui. Log in as root and go through:

  • Monitor › Hardware: power supplies, fans, memory and controller in green.
  • Manage › Licensing: it is in evaluation mode (60 days). vCenter assigns the licence in step 5.
  • Networking: vmk0 with the management IP and vSwitch0 with both uplinks.
  • Storage › Adapters: the Fibre Channel HBAs or iSCSI adapters you are going to use.

The same over SSH, quicker to paste into the onboarding ticket:

SSH · esx03.contoso.local
esxcli system version get Product: VMware ESXi Version: 8.0.3 Build: Releasebuild-24022510 Update: 3esxcli hardware platform get | grep -E "Vendor Name|Product Name|Serial Number" Vendor Name: Dell Inc. Product Name: PowerEdge R760 Serial Number: 7XKQ2W3esxcli network ip interface ipv4 getName IPv4 Address IPv4 Netmask IPv4 Broadcast Address Type Gateway DHCP DNS---- ------------ ------------- -------------- ------------ ---------- --------vmk0 10.10.10.23 255.255.255.0 10.10.10.255 STATIC 10.10.10.1 falseesxcli network ip dns server list DNSServers: 10.10.0.10, 10.10.0.11

Version and build must match the rest of the cluster. If the ISO was older, the host is updated with Lifecycle Manager before it gets any VMs.

4. NTP

A host with drifting time causes trouble with certificates, with Active Directory authentication and with logs, which stop lining up with vCenter's. Two internal NTP servers, usually the domain controllers or the network's time servers:

SSH · esx03.contoso.local
esxcli system ntp set --server=10.10.0.10 --server=10.10.0.11 --enabled=trueesxcli system ntp get Enabled: true Loglevel: warning Servers: 10.10.0.10, 10.10.0.11esxcli system time get2026-11-03T08:42:17Z

In the Host Client it is Manage › System › Time & date › Edit NTP settings: Use Network Time Protocol, both servers, and the startup policy Start and stop with host. The host's clock is always in UTC: do not let the difference with local time throw you.

5. Adding the host to vCenter

In the vSphere Client, right-click the cluster:

vSphere Client · CL-PROD › Add Host
Host name or IP addressesx03.contoso.local
User nameroot
Password••••••••••••
Next
Security Alertcertificate SHA1 thumbprint 4E:A1:...:9C
Yes
Assign licensevSphere 8 Enterprise Plus (CL-PROD)
Lockdown modeDisabled
VM locationDatacenter-Madrid
Finish
  • Always use the FQDN, never the IP: vCenter stores the name you added the host with and uses it to connect from then on.
  • vCenter installs its agent on the host, vpxa, and talks to the host through it from then on.
  • Before DRS sends it any VMs, put it in maintenance mode while you finish steps 6 and 7. If the cluster is managed with a Lifecycle Manager image, check the host's compliance with that image.
  • Lockdown mode set to Normal blocks root logins to the Host Client and forces management through vCenter. It is good practice in production, but keep an exception account (Exception Users) in case vCenter goes down.

6. Standard vSwitch and port groups

With a standard vSwitch each host has its own network configuration, so port groups are created on each one with exactly the same name as on the others. If it is VLAN20-Servers on esx01 and VLAN20-servers on esx03, vMotion fails when moving a VM between them.

SSH · esx03.contoso.local
esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup add --portgroup-name=VLAN20-Servers --vswitch-name=vSwitch0esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup set --portgroup-name=VLAN20-Servers --vlan-id=20esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup add --portgroup-name=vMotion --vswitch-name=vSwitch0esxcli network vswitch standard portgroup set --portgroup-name=vMotion --vlan-id=40esxcli network ip interface add --interface-name=vmk1 --portgroup-name=vMotionesxcli network ip interface ipv4 set --interface-name=vmk1 --ipv4=10.10.40.23 --netmask=255.255.255.0 --type=staticesxcli network ip interface tag add --interface-name=vmk1 --tagname=VMotionesxcli network vswitch standard portgroup listName Virtual Switch Active Clients VLAN ID---------------- -------------- -------------- -------Management Network vSwitch0 1 10VLAN20-Servers vSwitch0 0 20VM Network vSwitch0 0 0vMotion vSwitch0 1 40
  • VM Network is created by the installer with no VLAN. If nothing uses it, delete it: a VM connected there ends up on the trunk's native VLAN.
  • In vCenter, Configure › Networking › Virtual switches does the same with a wizard. With many hosts, a Distributed Switch saves repeating this on each one.
  • Test vMotion end to end: vmkping -I vmk1 10.10.40.21 to another host's vMotion IP.

7. The datastore

The storage team presents the same LUNs to the new host as to the others (zoning on Fibre Channel, or the host's IQN added on the array for iSCSI). Then a rescan:

SSH · esx03.contoso.local
esxcli storage core adapter rescan --allesxcli storage filesystem listMount Point Volume Name UUID Mounted Type Size Free------------------------------------------------- ------------ ----------------------------------- ------- ------ ------------- -------------/vmfs/volumes/6718a2c4-1b2e30f8-77d1-b8cef6a1c210 DS-SAN-01 6718a2c4-1b2e30f8-77d1-b8cef6a1c210 true VMFS-6 4397778075648 1975684857856/vmfs/volumes/6718a2d9-0f43aa10-4c2e-b8cef6a1c210 DS-SAN-02 6718a2d9-0f43aa10-4c2e-b8cef6a1c210 true VMFS-6 4397778075648 227633266688/vmfs/volumes/672f19b0-3a5c1e66-90ab-b8cef6a1c312 esx03-local 672f19b0-3a5c1e66-90ab-b8cef6a1c312 true VMFS-6 106837311488 105264447488

Shared datastores show up on their own after the rescan, with their names. For a new LUN, in vCenter: right-click the host › Storage › New Datastore › VMFS › name DS-SAN-03 › the naa. device the storage team gave you › VMFS 6 › use the whole partition.

New Datastore formats the device. If a LUN that already holds data does not show up mounted, it is not a new datastore: it is a presentation problem or a LUN copy that needs mounting, never formatting.

When you finish: the host leaves maintenance mode, SSH is off and the addition is recorded in the inventory.

8. The ticket: "esx03 shows Not Responding in vCenter"

Monday, 8:15. In the vCenter inventory, esx03.contoso.local is in italics with (Not Responding) and its VMs show as disconnected.

First, take the heat out of the ticket: Not Responding means vCenter has lost contact with the host's management agent. The VMs usually keep running. Ping one of them and open its application before you touch anything.

  1. Does the host answer? Open the Host Client (https://esx03.contoso.local/ui). If it does not load, go in through the iDRAC or iLO console and look at the DCUI: the management network, the VLAN, a cable or a switch port.
  2. DNS. vCenter connects using the name the host was added with. Check forward and reverse lookups from your machine and from the host (nslookup vcenter.contoso.local). One deleted or changed record is enough to cut it off.
  3. Ports. vCenter reaches the host on TCP 443 and the host sends heartbeats over UDP 902. If vCenter stops receiving them for about 60 seconds, it marks the host Not Responding. A firewall change between the management VLAN and vCenter produces exactly this: the host connects and a few seconds later goes back to Not Responding. From the host, nc -z -w 3 10.10.10.5 443 checks the return path; ask the network team about UDP 902 with the firewall log.
  4. Host space and logs. vdf -h shows the system ramdisks; a full one can bring hostd down. The logs that matter: /var/log/vpxa.log (the vCenter agent) and /var/log/hostd.log (the host management service).
  5. Restart the agents, one at a time. Over SSH or from Host Client › Manage › Services:
SSH · esx03.contoso.local
/etc/init.d/vpxa restart/etc/init.d/hostd restartesxcli vsan cluster getvSAN Clustering is not enabled on this host

This does not restart the VMs. Wait a minute or two and, in vCenter, right-click the host › Connection › Connect.

The DCUI's Restart Management Agents option (Troubleshooting Options) and the services.sh restart command restart every service at once. Do not use them if the host has vSAN (esxcli vsan cluster get), LACP on a Distributed Switch (esxcli network vswitch dvs vmware lacp status get) or NSX: it can cut the VMs' network or storage. In those cases, only vpxa and hostd.

If none of this brings it back, the next step is to evacuate the VMs (vMotion from vCenter once it reconnects, or an orderly shutdown in a window) and reboot the host.

In the ticket: time of the outage, what failed (DNS, firewall, service), what was restarted, and the final check: host Connected and a VM moved to it with vMotion and back.

Next steps

  • The vSphere and vCenter guide carries on from here: VMs from a template, snapshots with an expiry and a host in maintenance with the VMs running.
  • The iDRAC and iLO guide covers the out-of-band console you need when the host's management network does not answer.
  • With more than three or four hosts, a Distributed Switch and a Host Profile save repeating steps 4 and 6 on each one.
