Qué vas a conseguir
racadm set iDRAC.NIC.Selection Dedicatedracadm set iDRAC.IPv4.DHCPEnable Disabledracadm set iDRAC.IPv4.Address 10.10.90.21racadm set iDRAC.IPv4.Netmask 255.255.255.0racadm set iDRAC.IPv4.Gateway 10.10.90.1racadm get iDRAC.NIC.Selection[Key=iDRAC.Embedded.1#NIC.1]Selection=Dedicated2.

What you'll get
Being able to power on, see the screen, mount an ISO and read the hardware errors of any physical server without going to the room. iDRAC (Dell) and iLO (HPE) are a small controller inside the server with its own network and its own system: it works even if the operating system is hung or the server is off, as long as it has power.
Before you start
- The server's label: the service tag (Dell) or serial number (HPE) and the controller's factory password. Recent Dell servers ship with a unique password on the pull-out information tag; older ones came with
root/calvin. HPE servers ship with theAdministratoruser and a random password on the tag. - An IP on the management network reserved for each server, with its name in DNS (
srv-erp-01-idrac,srv-erp-01-ilo). - A jump host or workstation with access to that network. The management network is not exposed to the user network.
1. The management network
Two ways to connect the controller:
- Dedicated port: its own RJ45 at the back, marked iDRAC or iLO. It is the good option: if the server's network card fails, management keeps working.
- Shared port (shared LOM on Dell, shared network port on HPE): the controller uses one of the server's network cards. It saves a cable, but a change on that card or on the switch leaves you without management.
Either way, the controller goes in a separate management VLAN, reachable only from the jump host and monitoring. Ports to allow: 443 (web and Redfish), 22 (SSH), 623/UDP (IPMI, if you use it) and the console port (5900 on iDRAC; 17990 for the console and 17988 for virtual media on iLO).
The IP is set the first time from the boot setup (F2 › iDRAC Settings › Network on Dell; F9 › System Configuration › iLO Configuration Utility on HPE) or with racadm:
racadm set iDRAC.NIC.Selection Dedicatedracadm set iDRAC.IPv4.DHCPEnable Disabledracadm set iDRAC.IPv4.Address 10.10.90.21racadm set iDRAC.IPv4.Netmask 255.255.255.0racadm set iDRAC.IPv4.Gateway 10.10.90.1racadm get iDRAC.NIC.Selection[Key=iDRAC.Embedded.1#NIC.1]Selection=Dedicated2. Users and directory authentication
- Change the factory password on day one and store it in the team's password manager (or in the PAM, if there is one). It is the emergency account.
- Everyone else signs in with their directory user: Active Directory or LDAP, with groups that grant the role (administrator, operator, read-only). That way a leaver in AD loses access to every controller at once.
- On iDRAC it is configured in iDRAC Settings › Users › Directory Services; on iLO, in Security › Directory. Check the licence: for both vendors, directory authentication is one of the features that needs the advanced licence.
3. Virtual console and virtual media
The virtual console shows the server's screen in the browser (HTML5) from POST onwards: you use it to enter the BIOS, see a blue screen or a Linux box asking for fsck. Virtual media mounts an ISO from your machine as if it were a DVD drive in the server.
- On iDRAC9, the virtual console and virtual media on rack servers require the Enterprise (or Datacenter) licence.
- On iLO, without a licence the console only works until the operating system boots; with iLO Advanced you get the console with the OS running and virtual media.
4. Firmware and Lifecycle Controller
The firmware for the BIOS, RAID controller, network cards, disks and the iDRAC or iLO itself is updated from the controller, with no operating system:
- Dell: Maintenance › System Update, with a downloaded package or a catalog. The Lifecycle Controller (F10 at boot) does the same locally. Tasks go into the job queue (
racadm jobqueue view) and many apply at the next reboot. - HPE: Firmware & OS Software › Update Firmware, or the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) to bring the whole server to a set of versions tested together.
- For many servers, a central console: OpenManage Enterprise for Dell or HPE OneView for HPE, with a baseline and a report of which servers have fallen behind.
Update the controller itself first, then the BIOS and the rest, always in a change window and one node of each cluster at a time.
5. Alerts and logs
- Alerts: SNMP (traps to monitoring, SNMPv3 preferably), email and Redfish event subscriptions. At a minimum enable power supply, fans, temperature, memory and disks. On iDRAC9: Configuration › System Settings › Alert Configuration.
- SEL (System Event Log, Dell) and IML (Integrated Management Log, HPE): hardware errors with their date.
- For the case with the vendor: the SupportAssist Collection (Dell) or the Active Health System Log (HPE). It is the first thing support asks for.
6. The ticket: "the server won't boot and I'm remote"
- Does it have power and is it on?
racadm serveraction powerstatusServer power status: ONracadm getsel -iTotal Records: 4racadm getselRecord: 4Date/Time: 10/30/2026 06:41:12Source: systemSeverity: CriticalDescription: Multi-bit memory errors detected on a memory device at location(s) DIMM_A3.- Read the SEL or IML: a memory, power supply or RAID controller error explains almost every stop at POST. With a failed DIMM, the case with the vendor goes in with the log.
- Open the virtual console: does it stop at POST, at "No boot device" or in the operating system? If it doesn't see the disk, check the RAID controller and the virtual disks in the storage section.
- Cold restart if the screen is frozen:
racadm serveraction powercycleon Dell, or Momentary Press / Cold Boot under Power & Thermal on iLO. Over Redfish, the same POST toComputerSystem.ResetwithForceRestarton both. - Rescue boot: mount the ISO through virtual media and force a one-time boot from the virtual DVD.
If the controller doesn't answer over the web, reset the controller itself (racadm racreset, or Diagnostics › Reset iLO): it does not power off the server. If that doesn't work either, someone has to go to the room.
