Zabbix: instalar el servidor, desplegar el agente 2, plantillas y macros, dependencias, avisos, mantenimientos y un agente no disponibleZabbix: installing the server, rolling out agent 2, templates and macros, dependencies, alerts, maintenance and an unavailable agent

Zabbix 7.0 LTS on Ubuntu with MySQL and Apache, agent 2 on Windows with the MSI and parameters and on Linux, host groups, templates and context macros, trigger dependencies so a switch failure does not send fifty alerts, email and actions with escalation, maintenance periods and a host with a red ZBX icon.

Qué vas a conseguir

bash · zabbix.contoso.local (Ubuntu 24.04)
wget https://repo.zabbix.com/zabbix/7.0/ubuntu/pool/main/z/zabbix-release/zabbix-release_latest_7.0+ubuntu24.04_all.debsudo dpkg -i zabbix-release_latest_7.0+ubuntu24.04_all.deb && sudo apt updatesudo apt install mysql-server zabbix-server-mysql zabbix-frontend-php zabbix-apache-conf zabbix-sql-scripts zabbix-agent2

mysql · sudo mysql
create database zabbix character set utf8mb4 collate utf8mb4_bin;create user zabbix@localhost identified by 'ContraseñaLarga';grant all privileges on zabbix.* to zabbix@localhost;set global log_bin_trust_function_creators = 1;quit;
bash · esquema, configuración y arranque
zcat /usr/share/zabbix-sql-scripts/mysql/server.sql.gz | mysql --default-character-set=utf8mb4 -uzabbix -p zabbixsudo mysql -e "set global log_bin_trust_function_creators = 0;"sudo nano /etc/zabbix/zabbix_server.confDBPassword=ContraseñaLargasudo systemctl restart zabbix-server zabbix-agent2 apache2sudo systemctl enable zabbix-server zabbix-agent2 apache2sudo ufw allow 10051/tcp && sudo ufw allow 443/tcp

msiexec /l*v C:\Temp\zabbix-agent2-install.log /i zabbix_agent2-7.0-windows-amd64-openssl.msi /qn SERVER=10.10.20.15 SERVERACTIVE=10.10.20.15 HOSTNAME=SRV-FS-02 ENABLEPATH=1sc query "Zabbix Agent 2" STATE : 4 RUNNING

bash · srv-app-02 (Ubuntu)
sudo apt install zabbix-agent2sudo nano /etc/zabbix/zabbix_agent2.confServer=10.10.20.15ServerActive=10.10.20.15Hostname=srv-app-02sudo systemctl restart zabbix-agent2 && sudo systemctl enable zabbix-agent2sudo ufw allow from 10.10.20.15 to any port 10050 proto tcp

bash · zabbix.contoso.local
zabbix_get -s 10.10.30.21 -k agent.ping1zabbix_get -s 10.10.30.21 -k agent.hostnamesrv-app-02

Zabbix · Data collection › Hosts › Create host
Host nameSRV-FS-02
Visible nameServidor de ficheros 2 (Madrid)
TemplatesWindows by Zabbix agent
Host groupsServidores/Madrid, Servidores/Windows
InterfacesAgent · IP 10.10.30.22 · Connect to IP · Port 10050
Tagsservicio:ficheros · entorno:produccion
Add
  • Plantillas: Windows by Zabbix agent y Linux by Zabbix agent traen CPU, memoria, discos, servicios y red, con descubrimiento automático de discos e interfaces.

Zabbix · Trigger › Dependencies
NameZabbix agent is not available (for 3m)
DependenciesSW-CPD-01: Unavailable by ICMP ping
Update

Zabbix · Alerts › Media types › Email
SMTP serversmtp.contoso.local · SMTP server port: 587
SMTP helocontoso.local · SMTP email: zabbix@contoso.local
Connection securitySTARTTLS
AuthenticationUsername and password · Username: zabbix@contoso.local
Message formatHTML
Update

ConditionsHost group equals Servidores/Madrid · Trigger severity is greater than or equals Average · Tag entorno equals produccion
Operations
Pause operations for suppressed problems
Recovery operationsenviar a Guardia Sistemas
Update

Zabbix · Data collection › Maintenance › Parches noviembre
Maintenance typeWith data collection
Active since2026-11-10 21:00 · Active till: 2026-11-11 01:00
PeriodsOne time only · 2026-11-10 21:30 · duración 3 h
Host groupsServidores/Windows
Tagsentorno equals produccion
Add

Get value from agent failed: cannot connect to [[10.10.30.22]:10050]: [4] Interrupted system call
C:\Program Files\Zabbix Agent 2\zabbix_agent2.log
2026/11/04 10:52:17.402312 failed to accept an incoming connection: connection from "10.10.20.15" rejected, allowed hosts: "10.10.20.51"

grep "SRV-FS-02" /var/log/zabbix/zabbix_server.log | tail -n 1 2231:20261104:105530.118 cannot send list of active checks to "10.10.30.22": host [srv-fs-02] not found

What you'll get

A Zabbix server watching the Windows and Linux servers of the office and the server room: installed from the official repository, with agent 2 rolled out repeatably, hosts organised in groups, templates with thresholds tuned through macros, dependencies that turn a network failure into a single alert, email to the on-call team with escalation, and maintenance periods for patch windows. And, when a host shows a red ZBX, knowing whether it is the firewall, the agent configuration or the name.

Before you start

  • The version: Zabbix 7.0 LTS, with full support until June 2027 and limited support until June 2029. Server, proxy and agents on the same major version; an older agent works, one newer than the server not always.
  • An Ubuntu Server 24.04 for the server: for about 200 hosts, 4 vCPU, 8 GB of RAM and SSD storage; the database is what grows.
  • Ports: the server queries the agent on 10050/TCP (passive checks) and agents send to the server on 10051/TCP (active checks).
  • A DNS name (zabbix.contoso.local), a mailbox for alerts and a list of who is on call.

1. The server: Zabbix 7.0 with MySQL and Apache

The hospitality Zabbix guide installs with PostgreSQL and Nginx; here, the other common combination. Packages come from the official repository, not Ubuntu's, which carries an old version:

bash · zabbix.contoso.local (Ubuntu 24.04)
wget https://repo.zabbix.com/zabbix/7.0/ubuntu/pool/main/z/zabbix-release/zabbix-release_latest_7.0+ubuntu24.04_all.debsudo dpkg -i zabbix-release_latest_7.0+ubuntu24.04_all.deb && sudo apt updatesudo apt install mysql-server zabbix-server-mysql zabbix-frontend-php zabbix-apache-conf zabbix-sql-scripts zabbix-agent2

The database, with the character set Zabbix requires:

mysql · sudo mysql
create database zabbix character set utf8mb4 collate utf8mb4_bin;create user zabbix@localhost identified by 'ALongPassword';grant all privileges on zabbix.* to zabbix@localhost;set global log_bin_trust_function_creators = 1;quit;
bash · schema, configuration and start
zcat /usr/share/zabbix-sql-scripts/mysql/server.sql.gz | mysql --default-character-set=utf8mb4 -uzabbix -p zabbixsudo mysql -e "set global log_bin_trust_function_creators = 0;"sudo nano /etc/zabbix/zabbix_server.confDBPassword=ALongPasswordsudo systemctl restart zabbix-server zabbix-agent2 apache2sudo systemctl enable zabbix-server zabbix-agent2 apache2sudo ufw allow 10051/tcp && sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
  • log_bin_trust_function_creators is only needed while the schema is imported: set it back to 0.
  • The import takes a few minutes and shows nothing while it works.
  • The web interface is at http://zabbix.contoso.local/zabbix. The wizard asks for the database (MySQL, localhost, user zabbix), a name for the server and the time zone, and saves it all in /etc/zabbix/web/zabbix.conf.php.
  • The initial user is Admin with password zabbix. Change it on first login, create your own user with the Super admin role and keep Admin as the emergency account. For HTTPS, the certificate goes on Apache like any other site.

tail -f /var/log/zabbix/zabbix_server.log is the first thing to look at when something is not collecting. The server says there, with the host's name, what failed.

2. Agent 2 on Windows and Linux

Windows: the Zabbix Agent 2 MSI accepts configuration parameters on the command line, so the same command works for PDQ, MECM, Intune or a startup GPO:

cmd · silent install on SRV-FS-02
msiexec /l*v C:\Temp\zabbix-agent2-install.log /i zabbix_agent2-7.0-windows-amd64-openssl.msi /qn SERVER=10.10.20.15 SERVERACTIVE=10.10.20.15 HOSTNAME=SRV-FS-02 ENABLEPATH=1sc query "Zabbix Agent 2" STATE : 4 RUNNING
  • The real MSI name carries the minor version (7.0.x): use the same one as the server.
  • SERVER is who may query the agent (passive); SERVERACTIVE, who the agent sends to (active). HOSTNAME must match exactly, case included, the Host name that will be created in Zabbix.
  • The installer creates the Windows firewall rule for 10050 unless it is given SKIP=fw. If the network has another firewall between the server and the server VLAN, open it there too.
  • The configuration ends up in C:\Program Files\Zabbix Agent 2\zabbix_agent2.conf and the log in the same folder.

Linux, with the same repository as the server:

bash · srv-app-02 (Ubuntu)
sudo apt install zabbix-agent2sudo nano /etc/zabbix/zabbix_agent2.confServer=10.10.20.15ServerActive=10.10.20.15Hostname=srv-app-02sudo systemctl restart zabbix-agent2 && sudo systemctl enable zabbix-agent2sudo ufw allow from 10.10.20.15 to any port 10050 proto tcp

From the server, the test that separates "the agent does not answer" from "Zabbix is misconfigured" (package zabbix-get):

bash · zabbix.contoso.local
zabbix_get -s 10.10.30.21 -k agent.ping1zabbix_get -s 10.10.30.21 -k agent.hostnamesrv-app-02

3. Host groups, templates and macros

Each server is created in Data collection › Hosts › Create host:

Zabbix · Data collection › Hosts › Create host
Host nameSRV-FS-02
Visible nameFile server 2 (Madrid)
TemplatesWindows by Zabbix agent
Host groupsServers/Madrid, Servers/Windows
InterfacesAgent · IP 10.10.30.22 · Connect to IP · Port 10050
Tagsservice:files · environment:production
Add
  • Host groups by where it is and what it is (Servers/Madrid, Servers/Windows, Network/Switches): they drive permissions, actions and maintenance, so think them through once and stick to them.
  • Templates: Windows by Zabbix agent and Linux by Zabbix agent bring CPU, memory, disks, services and network, with automatic discovery of disks and interfaces. They work with agent 2. Do not edit the official templates: if you need to add something, link a template of your own alongside the official one.
  • Macros: template thresholds are macros such as {$VFS.FS.PUSED.MAX.CRIT} (90 % disk) or {$CPU.UTIL.CRIT}. They are changed on the host or a group without touching the template, and they accept context: {$VFS.FS.PUSED.MAX.CRIT:"/var/log"} = 95 changes only that file system, and on Windows {$VFS.FS.PUSED.MAX.CRIT:"D:"} only drive D.
  • Global macros live in Administration › Macros. Passwords (SNMPv3, a web check) go in a Secret text macro: the interface never shows them again.

4. Trigger dependencies: the switch before the servers

If the server room switch goes down, every server behind it shows as unavailable: fifty problems and fifty emails for a single fault. Dependencies fix that: a trigger that depends on another raises no problem while the other is active.

  1. The switch, SW-CPD-01, created with the ICMP Ping template (or the vendor's SNMP one). Its trigger is Unavailable by ICMP ping.
  2. On each server, the agent availability trigger (Zabbix agent is not available) is made to depend on the switch's. Since it comes from a template, the dependency is added on the host: Data collection › Hosts › SRV-FS-02 › Triggers, the trigger, Dependencies tab, Add and the switch's trigger.
  3. If the switch in turn depends on the router or the firewall, chain it the same way: router, switch, server.
Zabbix · Trigger › Dependencies
NameZabbix agent is not available (for 3m)
DependenciesSW-CPD-01: Unavailable by ICMP ping
Update
  • For many hosts, the clean way is a template of your own per location (for example, Madrid server room dependencies) with the dependency already in place, or the Zabbix API with a script.
  • Dependencies only work if the switch is checked more often or with a shorter threshold than the servers: if the server fires before the switch, the alert has already gone.

5. Alerts: the email media type and actions

First the channel, in Alerts › Media types › Email:

Zabbix · Alerts › Media types › Email
SMTP serversmtp.contoso.local · SMTP server port: 587
SMTP helocontoso.local · SMTP email: zabbix@contoso.local
Connection securitySTARTTLS
AuthenticationUsername and password · Username: zabbix@contoso.local
Message formatHTML
Update

Test sends a test email. Then, on each user, Users › Users › Media: the Email type, the address, the hours (When active, for example 1-7,00:00-24:00) and the severities they want. A user group (Systems on-call) is better than individual users.

The action decides which problems alert, whom and when, in Alerts › Actions › Trigger actions:

Zabbix · Alerts › Actions › Trigger actions › Production servers
ConditionsHost group equals Servers/Madrid · Trigger severity is greater than or equals Average · Tag environment equals production
Operations
Step 1 (immediate)send to Systems on-call by Email
Step 2 (after 30 min)send to Systems managers by Email · only if not acknowledged
Pause operations for suppressed problems
Recovery operationssend to Systems on-call
Update
  • Step 2 stops when someone acknowledges the problem: that way the manager only hears about what nobody has picked up.
  • A problem that matches no action alerts nobody: check that every production host group is in one.
  • Reports › Action log says what was sent, to whom and whether sending failed.

6. Maintenance periods

Patch Tuesday reboots servers on purpose. In Data collection › Maintenance:

Zabbix · Data collection › Maintenance › November patching
Maintenance typeWith data collection
Active since2026-11-10 21:00 · Active till: 2026-11-11 01:00
PeriodsOne time only · 2026-11-10 21:30 · duration 3 h
Host groupsServers/Windows
Tagsenvironment equals production
Add
  • With data collection keeps storing data and marks problems as suppressed; with Pause operations for suppressed problems, they do not alert. No data collection stops collecting: only for a host that is really switched off for days.
  • The Zabbix server checks maintenance every minute: create them a few minutes ahead of the reboot.

A maintenance with no end, or over every group, also hides the outage that has nothing to do with patching. Always with an end date and limited to what is being touched.

7. The ticket: "an agent shows as ZBX unavailable"

Wednesday, 11:00. SRV-FS-02 was added yesterday and in Monitoring › Hosts its ZBX icon is red. Hovering over it, the interface error says where to start:

Zabbix · agent availability error
Get value from agent failed: cannot connect to [[10.10.30.22]:10050]: [4] Interrupted system call
  1. Does the server reach 10050? From the Zabbix server, nc -zv 10.10.30.22 10050. If it does not connect, it is the network: the Windows firewall (the MSI rule was not created because it was installed with SKIP=fw, or a firewall GPO overrides it) or a firewall between the Zabbix VLAN and the server VLAN. On the Windows server, Get-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "*Zabbix*", and Test-NetConnection from another machine on the same network. Connection refused instead of Interrupted means it gets there but the service is not listening: sc query "Zabbix Agent 2".
  2. Does it accept the server? If it connects but fails, the agent log says so:
C:\Program Files\Zabbix Agent 2\zabbix_agent2.log
2026/11/04 10:52:17.402312 failed to accept an incoming connection: connection from "10.10.20.15" rejected, allowed hosts: "10.10.20.51"

Server= points at another IP: the old Zabbix server, or a proxy. Fix it in zabbix_agent2.conf and restart the service.

  1. Does the name match? Active checks (and the template's active items) fail even when the passive ZBX is green. The server writes it in its log:
bash · /var/log/zabbix/zabbix_server.log
grep "SRV-FS-02" /var/log/zabbix/zabbix_server.log | tail -n 1 2231:20261104:105530.118 cannot send list of active checks to "10.10.30.22": host [srv-fs-02] not found

The agent introduces itself as srv-fs-02 and in Zabbix the host is SRV-FS-02: the name is case-sensitive. Make the agent's Hostname= match the Zabbix Host name (or use HostnameItem=system.hostname and create hosts with the name it returns).

  1. Check: zabbix_get -s 10.10.30.22 -k agent.ping returns 1, the icon goes green within a minute or two and the host's Latest data shows recent values.

So it does not happen again, the MSI deployment command lives in one place (the PDQ or MECM package), with the right SERVER and SERVERACTIVE and HOSTNAME taken from the computer name, and hosts are created in Zabbix with that same name.

In the ticket: the interface error message, which of the three causes it was, the change made and the zabbix_get test.

Next steps

  • The hospitality case, with a proxy at each site, ICMP for tills and printers and an alert storm, is in the Zabbix for a restaurant or hotel guide.
  • To see Zabbix data alongside other sources on one dashboard, the Grafana guide.
  • The Windows agent is rolled out in bulk with what the PDQ and MDT guide explains.
