Qué vas a conseguir

What you'll get
The electronic health record, prescribing or appointments system reaching every PC in the hospital as a published application, the same on ward 3 as in A&E, and staff picking up their session on the next PC without opening everything again. In a hospital the PC is shared, used at any hour and the user has no time for a reboot: the publishing design and the support have to allow for that.
Before you start
- The Citrix environment already in place (Delivery Controllers, VDAs, StoreFront or Workspace): the basics are in the Level 2 Citrix VDI guide.
- The application installed and validated in the VDA image by the application vendor, with its version and executable path documented.
- The Active Directory groups per role (medical, nursing, admissions) defined by the application's business owner, not by IT.
- An approved change window: publishing or moving a clinical application is a change, even if it looks like one click.
1. Publishing the application
- Delivery Group: the application goes in an application Delivery Group with enough machines for a shift change, which is the real peak (everyone logs on at once at 08:00, 15:00 and 22:00).
- Application: executable path, arguments and working folder exactly as the vendor provides them.
- Users: the Delivery Group admits all clinical staff; each application's visibility is limited to its AD group.
- Store: the application appears in the StoreFront store or in Workspace, in a clear category ("Clinical") so nobody hunts through forty icons.
Never publish an application with access to patient data to "Domain Users". Who can see it is part of the access control an audit will ask you about.
2. The session that follows staff
On a ward, the nurse opens the application at the nurses' station, goes to a room and carries on at the trolley or another PC. What should happen is that their session reconnects on the new device, with the patient they had open:
- Session roaming: by default, application sessions follow the user between devices. It is set with
Set-BrokerAppEntitlementPolicyRule -SessionReconnection(for desktops,Set-BrokerEntitlementPolicyRule):Always,DisconnectedOnlyorSameEndpointOnly. - Workspace control in StoreFront: logging on at another PC reconnects the user's applications.
- Timers: how long a disconnected session lives. Too short and work is lost between rooms; too long and it ties up VDAs and licences. Agree it with the application owner and set it in the Citrix policy.
3. Badge or card at the PC
Many hospitals use a card or proximity badge solution on top of a generic Windows user: staff tap the badge, their Citrix session opens, they tap out or someone else taps in and the session disconnects.
- The badge solution comes from a third party; the Citrix team makes sure the reader is redirected or handled at the device, that Workspace app is on the version the vendor certifies, and that tapping out leaves the session disconnected, not logged off.
- Always test with two people on the same PC: the first must disconnect and the second open their own work, never see the previous user's session.
4. Director for support
Director is the on-call technician's first screen: search for the user, see which VDA they are on, the session state, from which device (ClientName) and with which Workspace app version, and the logon duration breakdown (profile, GPO, scripts). From there you can disconnect, log off or end a hung process without going into the server.
Give the service desk a help desk Director role: it sees and disconnects sessions, but doesn't change the site configuration.
5. The ticket: "the health record opens on one ward PC and not on another"
Tuesday, 16:20, ward 4. It opens on the nurses' station PC; on the treatment room PC the icon doesn't appear or the launch fails.
- Same user on both PCs? If it's the same person, the problem isn't their permissions: it's the device.
- The device: Workspace app and the store URL. A reimaged PC can end up on another version or without the store from GPO.
- The session, from the Delivery Controller:
Get-BrokerSession -UserName "CONTOSO\laura.prado" | Select-Object MachineName, SessionState, ClientName, ClientVersionMachineName SessionState ClientName ClientVersion----------- ------------ ---------- -------------CONTOSO\VDA-CLIN-07 Disconnected PC-W4-STATION1 24.9.10.28Get-BrokerApplication -Name "HCE-Clinical" | Select-Object Name, Enabled, UserFilterEnabledName Enabled UserFilterEnabled---- ------- -----------------HCE-Clinical True TrueThe session is disconnected from the station PC and the application is published correctly. If the treatment room PC won't reconnect, check the roaming rule (SameEndpointOnly blocks reconnecting from another device) and any Citrix policy filtered by client name or by organisational unit that doesn't include that PC.
- Closing: note the device, the cause and whether there are more identical PCs on the ward.
6. The ticket: "the session hangs on launch"
- In Director, logon duration shows which phase it stops at: profile, GPO, logon script or the application itself.
- If it always stops on the same VDA, put it in maintenance mode, let sessions drain and look at it away from the shift change.
- If it's the application (waiting for its database or a vendor service), escalate to the vendor with the time, the VDA and the user.
