Qué vas a conseguir
1. AVD o Windows 365
| Azure Virtual Desktop | Windows 365 | |
|---|---|---|
WVDErrors| where TimeGenerated > ago(4h) and UserName == "laura.prado@contoso.com"| project TimeGenerated, CodeSymbolic, Source, MessageTimeGenerated CodeSymbolic Source Message27/10/2026 08:41:12 ConnectionFailedNoHealthyRdshAvailable RDBroker No healthy session host is availableConnectionFailedNoHealthyRdshAvailable: no hay hosts sanos con hueco.

What you'll get
Knowing when to propose Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and when Windows 365, building a multi-session host pool that powers machines on and off by itself, with profiles that follow the user, and the routine for the "I can't connect to my desktop" ticket, which in these environments is almost never the user's network.
Before you start
- An Azure subscription with the Desktop Virtualization Contributor and Virtual Machine Contributor roles on the resource group (activated through PIM).
- Licences that grant the right to use AVD with Windows client: Microsoft 365 E3/E5, Business Premium or Windows Enterprise E3/E5 per user. The separate cost is the Azure machines, disks and storage.
- A virtual network with internet egress and, if the hosts join Active Directory, DNS that resolves the domain.
- An Azure Files Premium storage account for the FSLogix profiles.
1. AVD or Windows 365
| Azure Virtual Desktop | Windows 365 | |
|---|---|---|
| Billing | Pay as you go: Azure machines, disks and storage | Fixed monthly licence per user and Cloud PC size |
| Sessions | Multi-session (several users per machine) or personal | One Cloud PC per user |
| Who manages what | You: host pools, images, scaling, network | Microsoft the infrastructure; you the Cloud PC with Intune |
| Fits | Shifts, many light users, published apps (RemoteApp) | Contractors, persistent desktop, predictable cost, small IT teams |
The question that usually decides is who will maintain the images and the scaling. If nobody has time for that, Windows 365.
2. The host pool
With hosts joined to Entra ID you need two assignments to the same user group (sg-avd-office):
- On the desktop application group: the user assignment, so they see the desktop.
- On the machines' resource group: the Virtual Machine User Login role (or *Administrator Login* for IT). Without it, users see the desktop in their list but the sign-in to the host fails.
In the host pool's RDP properties, enablerdsaadauth:i:1 turns on single sign-on with Entra ID: users don't type their password again when the session starts.
3. Profiles with FSLogix
In multi-session, users don't always land on the same machine: their profile has to travel with them. FSLogix keeps it in a VHDX disk on Azure Files and mounts it at sign-in.
New-Item -Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\FSLogix\Profiles" -Force | Out-NullSet-ItemProperty "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\FSLogix\Profiles" -Name Enabled -Value 1 -Type DWordSet-ItemProperty "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\FSLogix\Profiles" -Name VHDLocations -Value "\\stavdprofiles.file.core.windows.net\profiles" -Type StringSet-ItemProperty "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\FSLogix\Profiles" -Name DeleteLocalProfileWhenVHDShouldApply -Value 1 -Type DWordSet-ItemProperty "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\FSLogix\Profiles" -Name FlipFlopProfileDirectoryName -Value 1 -Type DWordFlipFlopProfileDirectoryNamenames each profile folderuser_SID: you find it at a glance when one has to be released or deleted.- For hosts joined to Entra ID to mount the share with the user's identity, the storage account uses Microsoft Entra Kerberos (hybrid identities), and the share permissions go to the same
sg-avd-officegroup.
4. Autoscaling
Three machines running all night is money thrown away. A scaling plan powers them on and off by time and load.
For the plan to power machines on and off, the Azure Virtual Desktop service principal needs the Desktop Virtualization Power On Off Contributor role on the subscription or resource group. It is the most common miss: the plan exists, but never does anything.
5. Windows 365 in three steps
- The provisioning policy (above).
- A Windows 365 Enterprise licence of the right size (for example 2 vCPU, 8 GB, 128 GB) for each user in the group.
- Wait for the Provisioned status in *All Cloud PCs* and send the user to
windows365.microsoft.comor the Windows app.
From then on the Cloud PC is managed like any Intune device: profiles, compliance, apps (Level 3 Intune guide).
6. The ticket: "I can't connect to my desktop"
First, the state of the hosts:
With one machine full, another with FSLogix broken and the third powered off by the scaling plan, no new user gets in. Each host's health checks (domain join, FSLogix, AVD stack, agent) tell you which one fails without logging on to the machine.
Then the connection errors. With the host pool diagnostics sent to Log Analytics (or the Insights page):
WVDErrors| where TimeGenerated > ago(4h) and UserName == "laura.prado@contoso.com"| project TimeGenerated, CodeSymbolic, Source, MessageTimeGenerated CodeSymbolic Source Message27/10/2026 08:41:12 ConnectionFailedNoHealthyRdshAvailable RDBroker No healthy session host is availableConnectionFailedNoHealthyRdshAvailable: no healthy host with room. Look at the health checks and the scaling plan (capacity threshold too high, minimum hosts too low).- On the host,
C:\ProgramData\FSLogix\Logs\Profileexplains profiles that won't mount. The classic: 0x00000020 (the profile disk is in use), an earlier session left hanging on another host. Close that session and the user signs in again. - In Windows 365, *All Cloud PCs* has Troubleshoot (connectivity test), Restart and Restore to an earlier point.
7. What you review each month
- Cost per resource group in Cost Management: if it rises without more users, scaling isn't powering off.
- Hosts on an image more than a month old: they are replaced by new hosts on the current image, not patched by hand one by one.
- In Windows 365, the Cloud PC utilization report: the ones nobody uses are reassigned or the licence is removed.
- Profile size on Azure Files: a profile that keeps growing is usually an unexcluded Teams or OneDrive cache.
Next steps
- Azure Compute Gallery with Azure Image Builder so the monthly image builds itself.
- RemoteApp application groups: publish just the ERP instead of the whole desktop.
- Windows 365 Frontline for devices shared across shifts.
- The Level 2 VMware Horizon guide has the on-premises version of all this: comparing the two helps you defend the proposal.
